Abstract

X-ray CT never ceases to amaze. Not so long ago, many people thought that the heyday of CT was over. As we now know, this perception turned out to be incredibly wrong. Instead, clinical utilization of CT as well as research and development has continued unabated into this century and strongly reaffirmed its position as an indispensable medical imaging technology. We have witnessed tremendous image quality and performance improvements as well as a growing array of novel applications for CT. Nevertheless, in twenty years from now, we may very well be looking back at these developments and be amazed at how much additional progress we have made. There is indeed good cause to be optimistic as x-ray CT is well positioned to benefit from ongoing progress in detector technology; in the art of manufacturing high-precision components using 3D printing techniques; in data processing techniques including non-linear optimization methods and deep learning algorithms; and in pharmaceutical production of contrast agents.
